Unlike past major releases of Craft CMS where there was a lot of work for plugin developers, this version might impact those building projects with Craft CMS.
Why?
The workflow for configuring a new site has changed considerably because of UX changes, the entrification of Matrix block, field instances, and reusable, global Entry Types.
It will take a little adjustment, but the pay-off should be faster configuration of site settings with less clicking here, there, back over there, and here again. Rinse, repeat.
For those that plan to upgrade existing projects that use complex content or page builders using Matrix:
Matrix blocks will be converted to Entries, Matrix block types to Entry Types, and Matrix fields to global fields, so you might have several (or dozens or hundreds) of new fields created in the system.
The upgrade will handle field naming for backwards compatibility. However, you might end up with a lot more global fields than you did before. Keep this in mind, and I would pre-test your upgrades before committing to a specific timeline with a customer or client.
🙋 A Question for You
What additional tutorials would you like to see on Craft 5? I already plan to redo my flagship courses on building with Craft 5, but is there something specific you want to see in the next few weeks? Reply and let me know!
