The homepage template, which is index.twig in the root our of templates directory, is the first template in a series of templates that make the full homepage render.
The homepage template first extends the _layout.twig template. After that it iterates over the section entries that we want to have appear on the homepage and then includes the item template and hands over the work of rendering the content.
